In 1928 seventeen brave men gave their lives for the sake of others when the Mary Stanford Lifeboat at Rye Harbour was capsized. They are remembered at the memorial in Rye Harbour Churchyard, at the present day lifeboat station and in Winchelsea Church and there will be a service of remembrance at Rye Harbour church on Sunday at 3pm. A small exhibition at Rye Heritage Centre helps to tell the story of this awful tragedy which affected so many families in just one small community.
